I’m writing this to you from a social event, which happens to be a cocktail river cruise. One of the guests has incited a conversation about politics with the captain of the ship, so now, instead of enjoying information about the history and wildlife of the area we are listening to a heated debate.

The joy of reading crashed like a tropical storm over my crew-cut head while I was a kid, intensified through trips to our bookmobile. I trudged happily home with armfuls of books on dinosaurs, explorers, skin diving . . . whatever. I loved Lloyd Bridges’ “Mask and Flippers” (Chilton Co., Book Division, 1960) and met him years later in California.

This team assembled in Beaufort last week to craft a Santa Elena timeline, which will be the basic for future research.
