I'm very late in commenting on it, but this was an excellent rave! Or was it a rant! Whatever the case, it was very compelling. I identified with the "double agent" role. Polarization is making it harder and harder to deal with the real stuff of life, but how do we broker for peace?

I recently blogged about a fascinating University of Michigan study in which the authors describe "How facts can make things worse" -- that was terribly sobering. I like to think that sharing truth is the answer, you know, if we could just get to the heart of the matter and address it head-on. Wow! My headstrong approach might actually tend to make things worse.

This "double agent" is going back to base for some re-training. - Ken Symes

Ouch, now I really AM wincing! For the record, I do know the difference between the two words, and I do have a Dictionary. What I DON'T have is a proofreader. (Proofing your own work is tricky.) Luckily I have readers like you to help me out. Thanks for the catch. It's fixed now. - Margaret

"I whence..." A dictionary would probably be a useful tool. - CF

Hate to say it but since I've lived in Japan I've found less and less of what happens on American politics to be worth following...so I don't. America has changed so much that I really don't feel a part of it at all. And I'm happier than ever not being a part of it. Cowardice? Maybe, but I see little left worth fighting for. - Bob

Jeffrey, you have just made my day. I'm a longtime reader of Rod's blog, but I sometimes feel like the village idiot over at BQO, and hesitated even to post this link. (But it just seemed so apropos to the topic at hand.) Thank you for the extremely kind words! - Margaret

I found your article via Rod Dreher's blog and absolutely LOVE it. While I'm on the other side of the country, I've experienced (and practiced!) much of what you describe here.

Thank you for writing this. And don't sell yourself short - I liked your article even more than Rod's post! (Sorry, Rod!) - Jeffrey Spencer
